US Navy plans new destroyer

USS O'Kane, Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer

The Future Surface Combatant FSC programme could be based on the existing DDG 51 Arleigh Burke class destroyer.

The US Navy plans to introduce up to 18 new destroyer platforms under the Future Surface Combatant FSC programme to the fleet. The US Navy apparently considers a modified version of the existing DDG 51 Arleigh Burke class destroyer for this programme instead of its latest destroyer class, the DDG 1000 Zumwalt. The DDG 51 dates back to the 1980ies. According to the US Navy one ship of the DDG 1000 would come at a price of 3.3 billion $, recent Pentagon figures however put the price at arround 6 billion $. Due to the programmes delays and increasing costs, the service has already decided last year to procure only 3 of the initially planned 7 Zumwalt destroyers. Modifying the Arleigh Burke would affect every important component of the ship, currently the Navy is underway conducting design studies in order to find out if modifications could be made and the structure of the DDG 51 altered.
